A ground surveillance radar detects and tracks moving targets on the ground and water surface — personnel, vehicles and vessels — across open perimeters, borders and coastlines. It's optimized differently from the drone-detection radars covered in our Drone Detection Radar guide и Counter-UAS Radar System guide — those are tuned for small, fast, airborne targets, while ground surveillance radar is tuned for slower, larger, ground-level targets in cluttered environments (vegetation, terrain, sea state). The two categories generally require different processing, deployment geometry and acceptance criteria; whether a specific model can also cover the other target class depends on its published specifications and site-specific testing, not on the product category name alone. What Is a Ground Surveillance Radar?

Why detecting a person or a truck needs a different radar design than detecting a drone.

Slower Targets, More Clutter

Ground surveillance radar has to detect slow-moving, and sometimes intermittently-moving, targets close to terrain, vegetation, buildings or the sea surface. This requires target processing and clutter suppression tuned to the site's target classes and environment — a materially different design problem than filtering fast-moving airborne targets in open sky.

Phased-Array / DBF Beam Steering

Midradar's Surface Surveillance Radar line uses one-dimensional AESA (active phased array) or DBF (Digital Beam Forming) technology — solid-state, no moving parts — to scan a sector electronically and hold a stable track on multiple slow, low, cluttered targets at once.

Sector or Full 360° Coverage

Ground and coastal boundaries are rarely a single straight line. Depending on the site, you need either a 90°–95° sector radar aimed at one approach, or a 360° array covering every direction from a single mast — both are real, distinct Midradar product configurations (see below).

This is the same "radar detects → camera verifies → operator decides" logic used across Midradar's perimeter-protection deployments, and it's the reason ground surveillance radar is deployed as part of a radar-video fusion system rather than as a standalone sensor — the radar's job is early, all-weather detection; the camera's job is visual proof before anyone is dispatched.

Single-Sector (90°) vs. Full-Azimuth Coverage

Two real configurations of the same product family — site geometry is a primary factor in choosing between them.

Both share the same Ku-band DBF core specifications (≥10km range, ≥3km pedestrian, 4Hz refresh) per Midradar's published data sheets. The MR-RDG03-4R's product description states the four-panel array is built to achieve full-azimuth coverage; note that Midradar's own published parameter table lists "Azimuth Coverage: 90°" for the 4R model as well (likely per-panel, pending factory confirmation) — verify exact coverage geometry with Midradar for your specific site before specifying.

What's the difference between ground surveillance radar and drone detection radar?

Ground surveillance radar is designed to detect and track people, vehicles and vessels moving on the ground or water surface, typically at slower speeds and in clutter-heavy environments. Can ground surveillance radar detect boats and ships?

Does ground surveillance radar work in bad weather and at night?

Radar detection itself is largely weather- and light-independent, which is its main advantage over camera-only systems. In practice, deployments still pair radar with EO/IR (thermal) cameras for visual verification, since heavy precipitation and dense clutter can affect detection performance and a confirmed alarm needs visual proof before dispatch.

Do I need a 360° radar or is a single-sector model enough?
